Have you ever wanted to do some “Gozintas” but you couldn’t find your 6th grade “cypheren” book? Well, I have some help for you. The first page, “practical information”, and data on the Metric was prepared by The Kendall Oil Company. The second page, drill sizes and fractions/decimals, is from the “71 Pontiac Shop Manual. I have found both to be very helpful and trust you will also, if you save them.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR EVERY-DAY USE

To find the circumference of a circle, multiply the diameter by 3.1416.

To find the diameter of a circle, divide the circumference by 3.1416.

To find the area of a circle, multiply the square of the diameter by 0.7854.

To find the capacity of a cylinder, prism or box, multiply the area of the base by its altitude or height. reduce to cubic inches and divide by 231 to have the result in gallons.

A cubic foot. 1728 cubic inches. of water contains 7 1/2 gallons and weighs 62 1/2 pounds

A gallon of water (U.S. Standard) weighs 8.3 pounds and contains 231 cubic inches.

One horsepower is defined as the work required to lift 33,000 pounds. a distance of one foot in one minute

The unit of electrical output known as the watt is equivalent to 1/746 of a horsepower. 1,000 watts or 1 kilowatt is. therefore, equal to 1.34 horsepower.

The horsepower required to overcome the air resistance on a vehicle is estimated as the speed of the vehicle in miles per hour cubed, multiplied by the frontal area of the vehicle in square feet divided by 150,000.

The British Thermal Unit (B.T.U.) is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water l degree F. The metric counterpart of the British Thermal Unit is the Calorie. A Calorie is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of water 1 degree C.

A vehicle’s speed in miles per hour is the rolling radius of the loaded driving tire multiplied by the engine rpm and divided by 168 times the overall gear reduction of the power train.

To find the speed of a piston in feet per minute, multiply the length of stroke in inches by the revolutions per minute. and divide this product by 6.

To find the number of square feet of cylindrical surface lubricated per minute, multiply the diameter of the cylinder by 3.1416, then multiply by the length of the stroke in inches, then multiply by the number of revolutions per minute and divide that by 72.

Doubling the diameter of a pipe increases its capacity four times.

The grade resistance of a vehicle is 0.01 times the gross weight multiplied by the percentage grade.

EXPLANATION OF METRIC SYSTEM

The Metric System has been authorized by an act of Congress in the United States and by an act of Parliament in the United Kingdom. This system is in use in many countries with which the United States trades and it is being promoted for use in the United States as a replacement for the English System.

It is a decimal system, the meter being the basis of all measures, whether of length, surface, capacity, volume or weight. The meter measurers 39.37 inches, and is theoretically one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the pole. The unit of weight is the gram (15.432 grains), and is the weight of a cubic centimeter of water at its greatest density—about 39 degrees F. Multiples of the units are expressed by the Greek prefixes “deco”, “hecto” and “kilo,” indicating respectively tens, hundreds and thousands. Decimal parts of the units are indicated by the Latin prefixes “deci”, “centi” and “milli”, meaning respectively tenth, hundredth and thousandth.
