Pontiac Southern Nationals

The Dallas Area Pontiac Association continues to keep the Pontiac Southern Nationals fresh and different from other Pontiac events. This year we took “fresh and different” to a new level.

The Pontiac Southern Nationals 2013 was September 7th and 8th and it was Huge Success! Here are a few words from DAPA President John Dutton:

PSN Wrap Up

I would like to thank everyone who had a part in this year’s Pontiac Southern Nationals. That includes the sponsors, the planning committee, the volunteers, the folks and the Cavanaugh Flight Museum and especially YOU, the people who came out and brought a fantastic collection of Pontiacs. We had over 100 cars and they were absolutely incredible. Do not feel bad if you did not win an award (I didn’t either). The competition was incredibly tough and even if you did not win, you should know that your car was appreciated by dozens if not hundreds of people.

Our best of show winner this year was Ken Smith and his 1969 GTO Judge and the Lee Green award (DAPA’s choice) was given to Clifford Saxon and his 1972 Grand Prix SSJ Hurst Edition.

At the races on Sunday, it was a tough day for the Pontiacs. We had quite a few racers, but only a handful made it past the first round. Our big winner of the day was Joe Ed Boaz in his 1969 Firebird who came in 2nd place in the King Muscle class which runs 12.0 to 12.99 E.T.’s. Other top performers included Greg Scherer in his Gold 78 Trans Am. Greg was a first time racer and went several round in the Street Muscle Class which runs 14.0 to 15.50 E.T’s. Ted Fox also did well in the Street Muscle Class in his 2002 Trans Am. Finally, the Aubrey Parker Award went to Rick Pate in his 1969 GTO. The Aubrey Parker award was given for the best overall run of the day. Rick made a pass with a combined finish margin of 0.050 seconds. His reaction time and his time off of his dial in together were only 5/100 of a second. That is a near perfect run!

The photos from the show and race have been posted on the internet. Be sure to check them out by Clicking Here.

The members of the Dallas Area Pontiac Association hope you enjoyed this year’s PSN as much as we did. Make plans to attend next year as we build on the success. Finally, don’t forget our sponsors as you make buying decisions. They chose to sponsor the event because they love Pontiacs as much as we do!

Pontiac Southern Nationals 2012

Pontiac Southern Nationals
June 9 & 10, 2012

The PSN / ASN 2012 event photos have been posted and are available for viewing – click here; then on the PSN-ASN Gallery on the right.

The Pontiac Southern Nationals has been an all Pontiac 2 day event, with a car show on Saturday and a race day at the drag strip on Sunday, for many years.  This year it changed.

In 2012, we had an All Pontiac car show on Saturday, as usual for the PSN.  However, on Sunday the race day event at the Texas Motorplex was open to all makes of American cars.  This was the American Southern Nationals.  The racers in our group wanted to beat up on some cars other than Pontiacs.

Additionally, the ASN had a car show open to all makes of American cars at the Texas Motorplex on Sunday.  Pontiac owners wanted to compete with other makes on the show field as well as the track.

The All Pontiac Car Show was held in Richardson, TX on Saturday, June 11 at an old friend – The Renaissance Dallas Richardson Hotel, where we’ve had the PSN Car Show several times before.  This time however, the Car Show was out on the hotel plaza instead of the enclosed parking garage.  The plaza was set aside for Pontiac cars, and the crowd of enthusiasts.

The following day, Sunday, June 12, was race day  at another old friend, the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, TX –home of the NHRA Fall Nationals.  The PSN drag races have been at the Motorplex many times before and it has always been a great event.

The Pontiac Southern Nationals 2010! Hosted by DAPA!

The Car Show was held at the Hampton Inn & Suites Mesquite on Saturday, June 5th, 8:00am-3:00pm while the drag racing portion took place Sunday, June 6th at Dallas Raceway in Crandall, TX.

The Pontiac Southern Nationals 2010; We’re Glad to be Back in Dallas, TX  (it was last held in San Antonio, TX)

It’s been several years since the Pontiac Southern Nationals has been held in the Dallas, TX area. Two years earlier in 2008, the Dallas Area Pontiac Association held the PSN in San Antonio, TX.  It worked out quite well, considering the new location, with reasonable attendance for both the car show and the races, however, not quite as well as this June with nearly 100 Pontiacs in the car show field in Mesquite, TX and the 55 cars that registered for the drag races in Crandall, TX.

The car show was at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Mesquite, TX, adjacent to the Mesquite Rodeo, on Saturday, June 5th.  It was a warm, June day without a cloud in the sky.  Registration began at 8:00am and the Pontiacs began to arrive.  They were trickling in at first and we were hoping to hit at least 70 cars to fill the primary show lot.  Shortly after, we surpassed the 70 cars and totaled 85 Pontiacs registered.  Nevertheless, they kept on coming, even after we went passed the registration time limit, eventually filling a secondary section of the hotel parking lot.

We had a similar pleasant surprise at the race track the following day.  The drag race event was at the Dallas Raceway in Crandall, TX.  This is a new quarter mile track only a few miles southeast of Dallas that opened a few months earlier.  Cars were arriving at the track slowly at first on Sunday morning, June 6th, but the pace picked up and we were happy to see 55 Pontiacs register for a great day of racing.

For the two day event we saw a number of familiar Pontiacs and faces and quite a few new ones as well.  And this is what makes it all worthwhile for us, the PSN Staff that puts several months into arranging this event.  We would like to give a sincere Thank You to all those that attended, with and without a car entry.  We did some things right, and will improve on others.  So, keep your eye right here on the Dallas Area Pontiac Association web site: www.dapa.org for upcoming Pontiac events… Still Building Excitement.
