DAPA at Autorama 2014

Dallas Autorama 2014 is in the record books,  and DAPA participated once again this year with an eight (8) car club display.  Although earlier in the week the weather had been wet, cold, and more than a little bit ominous, by the time for move-in on Thursday we were graced with clear skies and pleasant temperatures that held throughout the weekend.  Once more DAPA would like to thank Derrick and Brenda Neyra for taking care of the club neon sign and display rigging, helping with set-up on Thursday and break-down on Sunday evening.

Pontiac Southern Nationals

The Dallas Area Pontiac Association continues to keep the Pontiac Southern Nationals fresh and different from other Pontiac events. This year we took “fresh and different” to a new level.

The Pontiac Southern Nationals 2013 was September 7th and 8th and it was Huge Success! Here are a few words from DAPA President John Dutton:

PSN Wrap Up

I would like to thank everyone who had a part in this year’s Pontiac Southern Nationals. That includes the sponsors, the planning committee, the volunteers, the folks and the Cavanaugh Flight Museum and especially YOU, the people who came out and brought a fantastic collection of Pontiacs. We had over 100 cars and they were absolutely incredible. Do not feel bad if you did not win an award (I didn’t either). The competition was incredibly tough and even if you did not win, you should know that your car was appreciated by dozens if not hundreds of people.

Our best of show winner this year was Ken Smith and his 1969 GTO Judge and the Lee Green award (DAPA’s choice) was given to Clifford Saxon and his 1972 Grand Prix SSJ Hurst Edition.

At the races on Sunday, it was a tough day for the Pontiacs. We had quite a few racers, but only a handful made it past the first round. Our big winner of the day was Joe Ed Boaz in his 1969 Firebird who came in 2^nd place in the King Muscle class which runs 12.0 to 12.99 E.T.’s. Other top performers included Greg Scherer in his Gold 78 Trans Am. Greg was a first time racer and went several round in the Street Muscle Class which runs 14.0 to 15.50 E.T’s. Ted Fox also did well in the Street Muscle Class in his 2002 Trans Am. Finally, the Aubrey Parker Award went to Rick Pate in his 1969 GTO. The Aubrey Parker award was given for the best overall run of the day. Rick made a pass with a combined finish margin of 0.050 seconds. His reaction time and his time off of his dial in together were only 5/100 of a second. That is a near perfect run!

Pontiac Southern Nats 2011 – Race Day

AutoRama 2013 was a huge success once more. With a total of eight cars in the DAPA display the camaraderie was wonderful. A special thanks to Rob Bender, he did a great job of arranging the cars to make the display model and color coordinated. With cars ranging from a 1955 Star Chief Convertible to a 2009 G8 GXP.

Included in the display were a 1955 Starchief (John & Colleen Darling), a 1958 Chieftain (Frank & Brenda Moren), a 1967 Lemans (Jack & Jane McWilliams), a 1969 Lemans (Don Fenton), a 1969 Trans Am (Rick Thiessen), a 1969 GTO (Brian Donahue), another 1969 GTO (Rob Garrett), and the 2009 G8 GXP (Mark Godfrey).

With the weather cooperating again this year, the move in and set up was smooth and stress free. The addition of the newly renovated DAPA Neon sign, with a special thanks to Brenda Neyra (& her husband, Derrick) was fantastic and added a nice touch to the overall display. There seemed to be a lot of great interest around the upcoming PSN event and a lot of fellow Pontiac enthusiasts were stopping by to discuss our hobby.

As far as how everyone placed… Rick Thiessen took “Best of Class” in his class, Brian Donahue, Frank Moren, Mark Godfrey and Don Fenton all took “Outstanding” in their respective Classes, followed by Jack McWilliams, John Darling and Rob Garrett taking “Place” in their Classes.

Pontiac Southern Nationals
June 9 & 10, 2012

The Pontiac Southern Nationals has been an all Pontiac 2 day event, with a car show on Saturday and a race day at the drag strip on Sunday, for many years.  This year it changed.

In 2012, we had an All Pontiac car show on Saturday, as usual for the PSN.  However, on Sunday the race day event at the Texas Motorplex was open to all makes of American cars.  This was the American Southern Nationals.  The racers in our group wanted to beat up on some cars other than Pontiacs.

Additionally, the ASN had a car show open to all makes of American cars at the Texas Motorplex on Sunday.  Pontiac owners wanted to compete with other makes on the show field as well as the track.

Drivers with cars that run an ET of 13.99 or faster, will require an approved Helmet

American Southern Nationals

The American Southern Nationals was created by the Dallas Area Pontiac Association to allow other makes of American cars to participate in our popular annual event, the Pontiac Southern Nationals.   The PSN has been an all Pontiac 2 day event, car show on Saturday, drag race on Sunday for over 15 years.  The American Southern Nationals will now be the second day of the event with 2 major changes, all makes of American cars are invited to race, plus we’ve added a second car show at the race track on Sunday for all American cars.   Pontiac Owners just wanted to compete with other American makes.

The American Performance & Classic Car Show

at Sewell Buick GMC

AutoRama 2012 was a super successful event.  With a total of eight gorgeous cars in the DAPA display the camaraderie was wonderful.  Rob Bender did a great job of arranging the cars to make the display color coordinated.  With cars ranging from a 1939 Sedan belonging to Tom & Judy Rivers to a couple of 1979 TransAm’s, one belonging to Kevin Skaggs and the other belonging to Cathy & Guy Larson.

Included in the display were a 1955 Starchief (John & Colleen Darling), a 1958 Chieftain (Frank & Brenda Moren), a 1969 GTO (Rob Garrett), a 1970 Lemans (Dan Grace) and “Tweetie”, a 1972 Formula (Lee and his daughter Jennifer Green).

With the weather cooperating for move in it made for a smooth and stress free set-up.  Also the addition of corner brackets to the stanchions, using Tommy Rivers’ idea and Frank Moren’s “manufacturing”, the ropes surrounding the display held up very well against the spectators.  The DVD, which was used during the weekend and produced by John Bily, was a huge success.  It was almost a moot point until Frank “found” the club’s TV/DVD player hidden in his garage… right where he left it after last year’s AutoRama.

As far as how everyone placed… does it really matter?  We had such a great time that we all were WINNER’s in our minds.  Never-the-less we all walked away with a plaque.  The three newest participants really seemed to enjoy themselves and we all would like to see more “newbies” at the next AutoRama.

The Pontiac Southern Nationals 2011 were home again this year, and since the Dallas Area Pontiac Association hosts the PSN, you do know where home is.

The All Pontiac Car Show was held in Richardson, TX on Saturday, June 11 at an old friend – The Renaissance Dallas Richardson Hotel, where we’ve had the PSN Car Show several times before.  This time however, the Car Show was out on the hotel plaza instead of the enclosed parking garage.  The plaza was set aside for Pontiac cars, and the crowd of enthusiasts.

The following day, Sunday, June 12, was race day  at another old friend, the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, TX –home of the NHRA Fall Nationals.  The PSN drag races have been at the Motorplex many times before and it has always been a great event.
